Sorry, Jay Sean fans. If you were expecting a new song to follow his first two Stateside singles “Down” and “Do You Remember,” you’ll be disappointed. While many a message board (and Sean himself, at one point) touted the ballad “War” as his third single, the pop/R&B singer has, in fact, moved on — not on to another gem from his U.S. debut, All or Nothing, but a brand-spankin’-new album.

“We are basically straight on to the next one,” Sean told MTV News when we caught up with him at the New York studio of the Orange Factory, the production outfit behind the majority of All. “I was already halfway through the album by the time ‘Do You Remember’ was hitting radio. We listened to it, and we were like, ‘You know what? I want to hit them with something fresh right now, not something that is off [this] album. Let’s go now, while we are ahead of the game, while we are ahead of the curve.’ ”

Last September, Jay Sean became the most successful male U.K. urban artist in U.S. chart history, with “Down” topping the Billboard Hot 100. The singer is now well on his way to releasing a new album.

“I’d say we are three-quarters done,” Sean said. “The majority of the album is [produced] by the Orange Factory, the same people who did ‘Down’ and ‘Do You Remember.’ I think this album is a little more grown and sexy. Not saying that I’ve grown older and sexier, but for me, this album is a natural progression. And that’s where I wanted to go and where it felt right.

After dropping two singles, boasting the likes of Lil Wayne, Sean Paul and Lil Jon, the artist from Hounslow, England, already has a few more exciting partnerships in the can for this next project — and another he’s hoping will come to fruition. And Sean recently made his own guest feature on Mary J. Blige’s emotional “Each Tear.”

“She’s actually gonna be on my album as well,” Sean said of Blige. “You’re gonna see Pitbull on the album. Wayne, of course. We are gonna get some of the Young Money characters involved. But really, I’d love to work with Rihanna. So I’m gonna see if I can come up with the right song for that.”

A prediction: This, while being a perfect description of how Jay-Z does that thing he does, and yet another example of why he is the best at doing it, will not linger around the upper reaches of the Top 40 in the same way that certain other songs from his ridiculously successful last album have.

It’s nothing to do with the quality of the music: ‘On To The Next One’ manages to be both brash and eerie at the same time, and Jay is officially so obviously Good With The Words that mentioning it only makes ME look foolish. By rights, this should have a similar chart life to ‘Empire State Of Mind (Part I)’, but there’s a problem. Some 30-odd years since it was first invented, some people still can’t quite handle hip hop.

Don’t believe me? Well, try this for a test. Keep an ear out for ‘On A Mission’ by Gabriella Cilmi song on your local radio station. Y’know the bit where she does an Avril Lavigne cheerleader/rap breakdown? Well, some stations have cut that out.

And the rap section in ‘She Said’ by Plan B? The bit where he deviates from the relative safety of the soul rehash to remind listeners that he started out as a rapper, and by so doing proves that hip hop and soul are part of the same musical spectrum? Again, gone.

It happened to Estelle’s ‘American Boy’ too. The parts featuring Kanye West suddenly disappeared, including his astonishing go at the word “rubbish”. I’ve mentioned it before, but it’s starting to look worryingly like a trend.

Heck, even the astonishing success of ‘Empire State Of Mind’, has been eclipsed by its rap-less ‘sequel’ by Alicia Keys. These things all point towards a general disquiet towards MCs by…

…well, here’s where I’m not sure what to say. It’s either record companies wanting to maximise a song’s potential, or radio producers wanting to play a song without losing listeners, but either way, they’re only doing this because they believe there is a large audience of people who can’t handle hip hop. And they are so scared of those people flicking the dial or refusing to buy the product, they’re prepared to cut it to bits.

The question is, are they right? Is the idea of a person talking over a beat still so scary that we have to pretend it’s not there, in case it prompts rioting on the streets? It’s fine to cut out the swear-words, but to lose whole sections of songs just in case they’re not universally popular is bonkers, isn’t it?

And it just makes you wonder, how many Glastonbury headline slots, No.1s, sellout tours, radio plays and guest appearances by Chipmunk is it going to take before this nonsense settles down? As I said, Hip hop has been around for THIRTY YEARS. That’s about the same age as Star Wars, and you don’t see anyone editing Chewbacca out, because he can’t speak proper English, do you?

After her summer album release, Miley Cyrus wants to take a break from making music. But her fans still have that next album to look forward to before she focuses solely on making movies, like “The Last Song,” out Friday (April 2). So what can they expect from Cyrus’ next batch of new music?

“My record is coming out this summer,” she said. “I’m excited about that. I’m looking forward to that, and then hopefully I can continue to do more films. [The album is] a little different. It’s kind of poppier, but then it still has an edge. All of my music kind of has to. I think it’s really fun. It’s definitely a good summer CD. It’s good to blast in your car.”

While much of Cyrus’ music has been more pop and even touched on country, she said this next album will have a bit of a Lady Gaga influence to it. “My new record has more of a techno vibe on some stuff. It’s fun,” she said. “You know, I just want to kind of do all different types of music, same as I do with movies. I never want to get stuck in a rut and just do one thing.”

In addition to the music on her own album, she has a duet with Bret Michaels, “Nothin’ to Lose,” for his record. The duo got some heat for the song’s racy content, but Cyrus just brushed it off. “I’ve always been super into his music,” she said. “He was the first concert that I ever went to, and it’s great when you can find people you can jive with and get along with.”

As much as she loves music, Cyrus said she’s ready for a break. “I have one more record coming out this summer in June, and then after that, I want to take a step back from music for a while,” she explained. “I want to continue to do film. Later in life, another record. But for now, I’d like to focus on movies.”
