Fox Orders Sketch-Comedy Pilot from Jamie Foxx

Almost 20 years since his breakout role on In Living Color, Jamie Foxx may be headed back to Fox for another sketch-comedy show, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The network has ordered the untitled pilot with Foxx and fellow In Living Color writers Fax Bahr and Adam Small serving as executive producers.

Jamie T – ‘Emily’s Heart’

With good friends, you don’t have to judge them on what they do, you love them for who they are and how they make you feel whenever they’re around. They can mess up, they can excel, you’re just happy to be along for the ride.

Jamie T feels like a good friend to me. I’ve never met him personally, never had any contact at all, in fact. But I’m always pleased to see him, always keen to hear his latest tall story or dewey-eyed ode to happier days. I like the cut of his jib, the things he notices, the fact that he’s strong enough to admit weakness, the fact that he’s a geezer who can write a tender, string-laden ditty like this and not go all EPIC/HUGE about it.

Hell, he’s even toned down the swearing, so that everyone can enjoy its scuffed magic, and it doesn’t mess with the sense of the thing or sanitise the reality of the situation in the song at all.

Not that there’s a lot you can do to sanitise a song sung from the floor, by a singer who is dying, after being shot by his girlfriend for messing her about. It doesn’t matter if the bullets are metaphorical or real, the message is the same: some rules are not there to be broken, and if you do, the consequences will be dire.

There’s no bitterness though. Jamie accepts his punishment with good grace, realising that he always knew that Emily was hardcore, and he was a fool to himself to try and get away with it. And it’s that lack of self-pity, that calm, clear-eyed understanding that really, he got what was coming to him, that he knew the risks when he did what he did, and that Emily is quite right to BE hardcore about her own finer feelings, it’s all of that which makes this such a beautiful thing.

No-one is saying guns are good, or that shooting your low-down cheating boyfriend is the right thing to do in any circumstances, it’s just a song about that moment when you realise you’re the agent of your own downfall. Somehow a slap on the face wouldn’t get the message across in the same way.

Just as well they’re not real bullets anyway, we’d all miss a good friend like Jamie something awful.

Casting Tidbits: Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Jamie Bell, Colin Firth

Casting Tidbits phone home! First up, THR reports Jeffrey Dean Morgan has signed on to star in the Michael Bassett directed psychological thriller The Unblinking Eye. The script (which was also written by Bassett) has homicide detective John Callisto (Morgan), now a retired recluse after being nearly murdered by a serial killer, being tracked down by a relentless journalist. As the two confront each other, dark secrets from both their pasts come to light. Maybe the journalist is the serial killer, or son of the serial killer, or he’s been dead the whole time! Or he’s planning to reboot the same movie within the movie itself. Read on!

Second, THR reports Cary Fukunaga’s adaptation of the classic piece of literature Jane Eyre is assembling quite an impressive cast. Joining the already cast Mia Wasikowska and Michael Fassbender will be Jamie Bell (Jumper, King Kong), Judi Dench (Nine, Quantum of Solace), Sally Hawkins (Happy-Go-Lucky) and Imogen Poots (Me and Orson Welles, 28 Weeks Later). Bell will play St. John, a clergyman who turns out to be Eyre’s cousin while Dench will play Mrs. Fairfax, the housekeeper of Thornfield Manor, who disapproves of Eyre’s engagement with Rochester. Hawkins is Mrs. Reed, Eyre’s aunt, who adopts her but abuses and neglects her until death and there’s no word on what role Poots will be taking on. I’m hoping it’s a surprise zombie to mix things up a bit and beat Pride and Prejudice and Zombies to the punch.

Finally, THR also reports that Colin Firth (A Single Man, Love Actually) and Michael Macfayden (Frost/Nixon, Death at a Funeral) will join Jim Sturgess in in Michael Winterbottom’s The Promised Land. Don’t be fooled, though, this isn’t the same Promised Land that was once in line to be directed by John Hillcoat before production was shut down. Winterbottom’s film, written by Laurence Coriat, is a political crime thriller set in British-ruled Palestine at the end of World War II. You know what? I’m hoping Imogen Poots makes an appearance as a surprise zombie in this one, too.
