Grey’s Anatomy: Will Meredith Go All Dark and Twisty Again?

After six seasons of Grey’s Anatomy (Thursdays, 9/8c on ABC), Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) finally seems happy. From exchanging Post-it vows with Derek (Patrick Dempsey) to romping in McDreamy’s office, Mer has been significantly less dark and twisty than the Dr. Grey we met on her first day at Seattle Grace.

Eminem’s Recovery To Include ‘Dark’ Track By Mobb Deep’s Havoc

In a departure from his previous albums, the bulk of Eminem’s forthcoming Recovery (due June 22) is being made by other producers. Just Blaze was announced as a major contributor last year, and in recent weeks Jim Jonsin (Beyoncé, Lil Wayne), Boi-1da (Drake), DJ Khalil (Clipse, Drake) were confirmed. Dr. Dre, of course, will handle some production duties as well.

On Thursday, Emimen revealed one more name, telling Shade 45 morning show host Angela Yee that Mobb Deep’s Havoc also made the cut. The announcement was news to Hav, who was still waiting on confirmation.

“I honestly didn’t think I was gonna make the project, but when I heard I did, I was definitely happy about it,” Havoc told MTV News.

Eminem has been a longtime fan of Mobb Deep, and Hav has been trying to land a beat on a project with the Detroit lyricist for just as long. He told MTV News that he provided Slim Shady with a dark number featuring an interesting sample loop, which he wouldn’t reveal just yet.

“When it came to him, it’s like, I really didn’t want to give him a track that he was already kind of familiar with rhyming to,” Havoc said. “I just wanted to do me and doing me consists of doing all kinds of different styles than what they associate me with, which is dark-sounding. The track that I did for him, it’s dark and at the same time it can go across the board as far as the content in the sample and what it’s saying. I try to think outside the box but not go too far with it. I think I met myself somewhere in the middle, and I hit him with a track and it worked.”

Since releasing last year’s The Hidden Files, the New York producer is in between projects at the moment as he awaits the released of incarcerated Mobb Deep partner Prodigy.

The Dead Weather’s Dark “Die By the Drop” Video Surfaces

While it turned out that today was not the release date for the Dead Weather’s new single “Die By the Drop,” as an Amazon page suggested, the first track off Jack White and Co.’s second album Sea of Cowards did wind up surfacing on Metacafe, giving us our first taste of the group’s second LP. While White handled directorial duties for some of the group’s Horehound videos, “Die By the Drop” was filmed by Floria Sigismondi, who also helmed The Runaways biopic in theaters now.

Making use of the spooky artwork currently up at the Dead Weather site, Sigismondi gives the song a dark, gothic ambiance as a lone lurking piano note paces the track. After Alison Mosshart handles the intro verse, she and White trade off lines for the remainder of the track, only coming together to sing “I’m going to take you for worse or better” over one of White’s trademark guitar riffs. Fans of Horehound will not be disappointed, as the Dead Weather loudly picked up where they left off.

Sea of Cowards still doesn’t have a firm release date. According to Amazon, when the “Die By the Drop” single is released, it will be joined by “Old Mary,” which you can listen to over at Some Kind of Awesome.

ABC Goes Dark for Cablevision Customers in New York

Millions of cable subscribers in New York lost ABC’s flagship affiliate early Sunday after a cable operator and the network couldn’t reach an agreement on a new contract, according to The Associated Press.

With the signal being dropped, Cablevision Systems Corp. customers will most likely be unable to watch the 82nd Academy Awards, which will be aired on Disney Co.’s ABC network. The action comes after several days of angry words and brinksmanship by both sides, which continued once the plug was pulled…

Hugh Laurie in Discussions to Star in Dark Comedy ‘Oranges’

Many fans have been waiting to see “House” actor Hugh Laurie make the jump to the big screen in a lead role, not counting voice roles (like in Monsters vs Aliens) or supporting roles (like in Street Kings or Stuart Little). Potentially some good news for Laurie fans, as the LA Times’ 24 Frames blog is reporting that Laurie is “in discussions” to play the lead role in a new project called Oranges (or The Oranges written by Jay Reiss and Ian Helfer). You may remember seeing it on the 2008 Black List. It’s a dark comedy about a man who has a romantic relationship with the daughter of a family friend, which turns their lives upside down.

The LA Times also says that Anthony Bregman (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Synecdoche New York) is producing the project, but it doesn’t seem to have a director yet (although IMDb lists Julian Farino as director). They call this a “dark dramatic comedy” and say Laurie will be playing the “creepy/sympathetic older man” who gets into the relationship. As for the younger key role, they’ve heard its between Leighton Meester and Mila Kunis, but one of them hasn’t been chosen yet. So this isn’t officially confirmed casting news, but if everything stays on course, we could finally see Hugh Laurie finally starring in a feature film.

Although this isn’t the exact same, I’m kind of reminded of Robin Williams’ edgy appearance in the dark comedy World’s Greatest Dad, which is sort of becoming a cult hit. I hope this turns out to be more than just a cult hit, but from the sounds of it, it’s the kind of strong lead performance that will be remembered after premiering at a festival. Hopefully this comes together with Laurie on-board – we’ll keep you updated!
