Hey remember the other day when I was saying how frustrating it is that the Will.I.Am / Nicki Minaj song is less than 100% amazing? We had some laughs, right? It was all in good fun. Nobody got hurt, there were no permanent injuries and we all went away assuming Will would soon bounce back, that he would save his best ideas for the next Black Eyed Peas opus.

I wish those innocent days were still with us. I wish I still believed such a turnaround were possible. I wish, in fact, that I had never ever heard this deeply terrible song, which is so very poor that it has come close to destroying a perfect relationship with the band’s finest moment to date – the mighty ‘Boom Boom Pow’.

I take no pleasure in saying it. I’m an optimist by nature and try to be fair, up to a point. I mean clearly some things are not going to be to my taste, and I’m fine with that. But it’s hard to see whose taste this will appeal to. People who hate music? People who are a long way away? It’s baffling.

(Here’s the official audio. Don’t listen to it. It hurts.)

I don’t even mind the wholesale pinching of ‘(I’ve Had) The Time Of My Life’ from Dirty Dancing. That’s just a standard jump-off point for yer modern hip hop production. The real horror comes in when you have to make the lumpy transition from that wobbly rubbish portamento thing in the verses, to the rubbish shouted “I’M! HAVING! A GOOD! TIME! WITH YOU!” bit, and THEN the stuttery, edited vocals of the chorus, which are also rubbish.

It is so rubbish, in fact, it has left me wondering what I’ve done to hurt music’s feelings this much. It’s so bad it makes me want to go up to the art of popular song and hit its face off with a rubber mallet. It’s so bad that it runs the risk of spoiling all other music forever.

It’s a great big squirt of bleach in the delicious gumbo of pop. The fact that it arrives in a puff of self-regard and leaves without having the foggiest idea what a disgusting stench it leaves it its wake makes everything somehow worse.

I’ll leave the final word to Apl, a man who is already on thin ice after that rap in which he boasts about not “messing with the maggots” because he’s in with “the baddest chicks in the club”. It just makes me assume that he said a more offensive word originally, and a wise head in the BEP camp made him change it.

“Mirror mirror on the wall,” he intones, “who’s the baddest of them all?”

Well we all know the answer to that one, don’t we? Shall we say it together? On the count of three…one, two…

“Today my heart is broken, Ronnie passed away at 7:45am 16th May. Many, many friends and family were able to say their private good-byes before he peacefully passed away,” wife and manager Wendy Dio wrote in a statement on the heavy metal star’s official site. “Ronnie knew how much he was loved by all. We so appreciate the love and support that you have all given us. … Please know he loved you all and his music will live on forever.”

Dio, who revealed he was suffering from stomach cancer last year, became the first lead singer of heavy metal band Rainbow, which was formed by Deep Purple guitarist Ritchie Blackmore. After recording three albums with the group, Dio left the band and joined Black Sabbath following Ozzy Osbourne‘s departure in 1980. The singer and the band then created the extremely popular …

Earlier this week, an overseas interview with 50 Cent hit the Web in which he said his upcoming LP, Black Magic, would have a different feel.

“I went to a nightclub afterparty,” 50 told reporter Jonas Pettersen. “It’s a little different music going on before I got there. They play your music when you come. But the music they played before they started playing a lot of what I created was more uptempo, more dance. I wanted to make a song like that. So I went into the studio. Because I’m traveling with my live band, I took my band with me and sequenced it and recorded the actual record while I was out there. I did two other songs I had production for. I had been writing those songs for a while. So I finished them and recorded them while I was out.”

The G-Unit General is leaning toward dance music? Fif says not so fast. He clarified his creative direction when he called into U.K. DJ Tim Westwood’s show the other day.

“I got a joint that I did that was real uptempo,” 50 told Westwood. “It’s a different type of vibe. It’s still 50 Cent. It’s official. If you heard the record, you’d feel different. My Black Magic album, I’ve been listening to different types of music. I just wanna create something that’s outta the box. I’m using different song formats. I’ll write a rap song in the sequence of a different kind of record. A traditional hip-hop record may have three 16-bar verses. To write it in a different formant instead of the way a traditional rap record is written, to experiment with different things, it’s still hip-hop music. It’s still 50 Cent content; it’s just written in a different way.”

50 also talked about getting sued for posting a sex tape of one of the mothers of Rick Ross’ children online.

“That wasn’t me; that was Pimpin’ Curly,” 50 said of his comedic alter ego. “When a person tries to say, ‘You’ve done something that’s created mental harm to them in some way,’ then they might wanna consider the recordings of Rick Ross saying she’s an actual call girl. Or the pamphlets I’m showing you in the actual tape that’s saying she’s available. How distraught is she? They think I bought the tape. I didn’t even buy it.”

Pixies frontman Frank Black has released plenty of solo albums over the years, but perhaps nothing as freaky as his forthcoming NonStopErotik, due out on March 30th. The disc — which was co-produced by longtime collaborator Eric Drew Feldman — features some of his most overtly sexual songs, including the swirling ballad “When I Go Down on You” and the snarling, mid-tempo anthem “Lake of Sin.” Rolling Stone caught up with Black to talk about his inspiration, why raising five kids hinders his ability to work and the future of the Pixies.

Check out a gallery of Frank Black and the Pixies in action.

Many of these songs are overtly sexual in a way, including “Lake of Sin,” where you sing about someone undressing behind ferns. What was the inspiration for that?
When I was a kid, in second grade, “fern” was a euphemism or code word for vagina. I don’t know where that came form. I guess the record has some graphic sexual detail but it’s only really referenced in a literal way; it’s just me talking about ferns.

Many indie-rock bands don’t discuss sexual topics so openly in their songs.
You know, I read a disparaging review that questioned whether someone wants to listen to old Frank Black singing about vaginas or whatever. I understand the point, but really the record is not meant to be a sexual appendage to your own experiences. It’s not meant to be a record you make love or masturbate to. I wouldn’t masturbate to a recording of my own voice either!

You recorded most of these songs while on the road. Why?
I’ve got five kids. Maybe I can sit at the kitchen piano and start to work on something for a few minutes. But in general, I work on the road and in hotel rooms or studios.

NonStopErotik includes a particularly revved-up version of the Flying Burrito Brothers’ “Wheels.” Where’d that come from?
I forced Pete Yorn to record that for a session of his that I was working on. He did a fine, tender version of it. I realized at the time that the obsession with that song was my own obsession and that I need to do it myself. I didn’t want to do anther country rock version of it so we just changed the tempo — you know, the whole “let’s give it the Velvet Underground, indie-rock treatment.” A lot of eighth and sixteenth notes. I’m pleased with the Velvet Underground treatment.

Any plans to do a solo tour?
I don’t have anything on the books yet. I’m working something out with this film company and we’re trying to do a simulcast with a Q&A and a band performance. It’ll be a performance of the record with these little films and then a Q&A. We’re still working on that, though.

What’s the status of another Pixies album or tour?
I certainly hope to tour again. I don’t want to misspeak but Europe and Israel are happening and there’s other stuff happening in the fall. But that’s still to be confirmed. As for an album, we’re not doing one officially. I think everyone in the band is creative and writing and stuff. But we haven’t raised the flag, like, “The Pixies are currently recording.”

She looks like Marcie from “Peanuts,” embraces theatricality like Adam Lambert and sings Rolling Stones songs like she’s Mick Jagger’s long-lost daughter (which, knowing Mick’s reputation, could be a possibility). Her name is Siobhan Magnus, and her rising star shone bright on Tuesday’s (March 16) top 12 episode of “American Idol.”

A resident of Barnstable, Massachusetts, Siobhan’s huge family has always encouraged her artistic endeavors. And on Tuesday night, she took them to a level as big as Mick’s lips, singing a dramatic interpretation of the Rolling Stones classic “Paint It Black.”

Released in 1966 from their fourth album Aftermath, the song was written by one of the all-time great rock teams: Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. A #1 hit in both the U.S. and U.K., Rolling Stone magazine ranked it #174 on their 2004 list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. Interestingly enough, the song’s signature sitar riff was hatched after Stones guitarist Brian Jones visited George Harrison of the Beatles, who at the time was experimenting with Middle Eastern sounds.

Sorrowful and dark but with an impossibly catchy chorus, the lyrics are believed to be about a man mourning his dead girlfriend. As such, the song has been employed in recent years as a pop-culture shortcut to signify death and mourning — from “Stir of Echoes” to “Full Metal Jacket” to “The Sopranos.” The song was also given a shout-out in the My Chemical Romance tune “Welcome to the Black Parade.”

Wearing an appropriately colored black dress and “bringing the drama to ‘American Idol’ season nine,” as Randy Jackson put it, Siobhan painted the stage black — and you could color the judges impressed.
