Kevin Costner to Direct and Star in ‘A Little War of Our Own’
It’s been almost seven years since Kevin Costner directed his last film (Open Range) and about fourteen years since I saw him in a film that I actually enjoyed (Tin Cup). It’s a shame, because I grew up really liking him in films like Field of Dreams and Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves and then as I got older, I discovered his great performances in The Untouchables, Dances with Wolves and Bull Durham as well. Now he might get a chance to shine on both fronts again as Variety reports that Costner will direct and star in A Little War of Our Own, which centers on a sheriff who has to try and keep a town from exploding into violence.
Armyan Berstein will be producing through Beacon Pictures (the fourth time he has done so with Costner, and the first since Open Range) and says it’s been a real passion project they’ve wanted to get off the ground for awhile, saying: “This has been a dream project for Kevin and I for years. The themes are timeless – war, peace and reconciliation. The canvas is epic – look at the movies Kevin has directed.” All four of them, only one of which was really great (Dances with Wolves)? Done. I’m not exactly sure what kind of film this will be either, because the logline sounds like a western, but Variety mentions the pursuit for someone to take another lead role as a German U-boat commander. So who knows what this “little war” is going to be like?

I too liked Open Range. I’ve always thought it was kinda underrated.
hey #11………..fair enough scott. i think it comes down to personal choice on this one. i give the nod to “untouchables” only because i liked the subject matter a little more than DWW.
they’re both fantastic films.
I like most of Costner’s films and think he is a talented actor, given roles that suit him…looking forward to this one…but please, no more “steamers” like “Tin Cup”…worst pile of manure I ever endured watching…
Open Range is a great film. One of the best shoot-outs in recent memory in the finale (if I recall correctly), and excellent performances from the whole cast. Costner is seriously underrated these days, which is a shame. I’ll look forward to this!
#6 Untouchables is right behind DWW. That was a landmark film, Untouchables was great but not quite that calibre.

I hope its a western,they dont make them anymore it seems,and I really liked Avatar{I mean Dances with wolves} and Open Range.
As a fan of Costner’s work in the 80s and early 90s (especially DANCES and JFK), I’ve been lately disappointed by his recent string of projects (excluding OPEN RANGE, which was actually pretty good).
This sounds like it could rekindle the spark that’s been absent for so long from his work.
From what I understand of the synopsis, it sounds like the film will have two parts: one with Costner’s sheriff (to represent the domestic side of the war) and one set at see (thus, the U-Boat). I could be wrong on this, though. Either way, consider me interested.
please for the love of god let if be a western PLEASE MAKE IT A WESTERN. Open Range was so fucking good.

ethan, this is the second day in a row i’ve disagreed with your asessment of movies…….. you didn’t like “open range” and “mr. brooks”? they both are very good movies. it’s true costner has laid some big eggs as well, but “tin cup” WAS NOT his last good movie.
Yes Dances With Wolves is incredibly good. Theres just no way he could make another one as good as that.

Awesome. Costner is a true talent that shines bright but hasn’t fared well at the box office lately. I thought he and Robert Duvall kicked ass in “Open Range”. I also thought his flicks, “Mr Brooks” and “Swing Vote” were pretty good too. I’m looking forward to this flick.
