Jane’s Addiction In the Studio With Duff McKagan on Bass

One of the worst-kept secrets in rock is no longer hush-hush: thanks to news posted on guitarist Dave Navarro’s Twitter, we can officially report that Guns n’ Roses/Velvet Revolver bassist Duff McKagan is in the studio working with Jane’s Addiction on the reunited group’s next album. Navarro posted a photo on his Twitter today of Jane’s in action, with Duff alongside Perry Farrell and drummer Stephen Perkins. “Another day of writing and creating in the studio with Jane’s Addiction!” Navarro wrote.

As Rolling Stone reported earlier this month, original Jane’s Addiction bassist Eric Avery quit the band after the group’s tour of Australia. Avery had previously told fans that while he would perform the last few tour dates with Jane’s, he was not taking part in studio sessions for their new music. McKagan was immediately rumored to be filling in for Avery in the studio, and while Jane’s Addiction never made a formal announcement, even McKagan’s buddy Slash knew Duff was working with Jane’s when Rolling Stone asked about the state of Velvet Revolver. “I think Duff [McKagan] is doing something with Jane’s Addiction right now so we’re all sort of all over the place doing whatever until we can all regroup,” Slash said.

This isn’t the first time Jane’s Addiction have recruited a high-profile bassist to fill in for Avery: Back in 1997, after Navarro joined Red Hot Chili Peppers, the guitarist convinced RHCP bassist Flea to fill the vacancy when Jane’s reunited in 1997 for a tour and a pair of new tracks on Kettle Whistle. Porno For Pyros’ Martyn Lenoble and the Panic Channel’s Chris Chaney — who appears on 2003’s Strays — have also filled in on bass for Jane’s Addiction. Avery, who was Jane’s bassist from 1985 to 1991, rejoined the band 17 years later in 2008.

ok. i know he’s recording with them.
But is he IN THE BAND now? officially?
a touring musician?
or just an in studio guest on some of their new tracks?
who is a want that bass. look around is where you should do guys. is are wasting time with that duff. original man is the only spot of choice
Duff deserves more recognition – his bass playing in GNR was more complex than people realise and his musicianship is always top notch…I strongly doubt you are anywhere near as talented as Duff shanemckillop…this could be an interesting colaboration.
^^^ Here’s an idea shanemckillop, why don’t you do something with your supposed “talent” other than bashing a legendary musician?
With that out of the way, I would say Eric Avery is one of the few bassists who were a hugley important member of their respective bands. Many of Jane’s best songs were built around Eric’s riffs. “Been Caught Stealing” was one of there most popular songs, and the bass line ALWAYS blows me away. I guess this has been coming for quite some time though.
Duff is a great, iconic bassist as well though and I hope his input is valued in the new formation of J’sA. Neverthless it’s always great to hear new music from any of these guys and Duff being in the band will make even more interseting.
Can’t put your arms around a memory.
Anything for a buck.
Long Live THE HOLLYWOOD DREGS!!!
I could play bass better than Duff McKagan. Wouldn’t it be nice to get some young blood in the mix? Hollywood dregs draggin the band down.
I’m gonna miss Eric Avery’s bass licks. Hopefully this next album is worthy of buying on vinyl.
I don’t like Poo Salad but I like Jane’s Addiction.
Rock on.
