The foods we choose to eat may determine our risk of dementia, mounting evidence suggests.

Latest work in Archives of Neurology shows sticking to a diet rich in nuts, fish and vegetables significantly cuts the chance of developing Alzheimer’s.

A "Mediterranean diet" containing plenty of fresh produce and less high-fat dairy and red meat has long been thought to improve general health.

Experts believe it is a combination of nutrients in foods that is important.

But they stressed that diet was not the sole cause or solution where dementia is concerned.

Good combinations

Dr Yian Gu and colleagues at Columbia University Medical Centre in the US studied the diets of 2,148 retirement-age adults living in New York.

Over the four years of the study, 253 of these older adults developed Alzheimer’s disease.

When the researchers scrutinised the diets of all of the individuals in the study, a pattern emerged.

Adults whose diets included more salad dressing, nuts, fish, poultry, fruits and green leafy vegetables, and less high-fat dairy, red meat and butter, were far less likely to develop dementia.

But it is the varying levels of specific nutrients that these food combinations offer that is important, say the researchers.

Diets rich in omega 3 and 6 fatty acids, vitamin E and folate but low in saturated fat and vitamin B12 appear to be best.

Experts have long suspected that nutrients might modify dementia risk.

Folate reduces circulating levels of the blood amino acid homocysteine which has been linked to Alzheimer’s.

Similarly, vitamin E might be protective via its strong antioxidant effect, while monosaturated and saturated fatty acids could increase dementia risk by encouraging blood clot formation, say the researchers.

Rebecca Wood, chief executive of the Alzheimer’s Research Trust, said: "Understanding the connection between diet and dementia risk may help prevent the development of diseases like Alzheimer’s for some people.

"Adapting our lifestyles as we get older – by exercising regularly, watching what we eat and maintaining an active social life – can reduce dementia risk.

"Unfortunately, no diet or lifestyle factor can eliminate dementia risk entirely."

With 35 million people worldwide living with dementia, she said it was important to focus efforts on research to develop new treatments.

The Japanese enjoy one of the healthiest diets on earth. Japan’s population has the lowest level of obesity in the developed world and people tend to live longer than any other country.

The Japanese diet is an easy and fun diet to follow.

Healthy Diets should be Effortless

There are major concerns over low or no carb diets, such as the Atkins diet. These diets are not natural, and aside from health concerns, many people find them difficult to follow.

The Japanese diet is natural and a sensible way to eat (similar to the Mediterranean diet) and like most healthy diets it is not difficult to follow.

The Perfect Healthy Diet for Everyone

The traditional Japanese diet is very low in cholesterol, fat, and calories and high in fiber and here are the eight secrets of its success:

1. Eat Rice

How many times in a week do you eat rice? For the Japanese it is normally daily.

Rice is rich in carbohydrates and proteins it is the basis of the Japanese diet.

2. Eat More Fish

The Japanese eat about 70kg of fish per person per year, that’s four times as much as the average for the rest of the world.

Eating fish (particularly oily fish) lowers the risk of disease and increases vitality.

3. Eat Soya

The Japanese eat 10 times more Soya produce than any other nation. Low in calories and fat and high in protein Soya is also packed with plant oestrogen.

4. Variety

A recent study showed that Japanese people eat an average of 100 different foods a week, compared to just 30 in other western countries. This well balanced diet provides all the nutrients the body needs.

A premium is also placed upon freshness and natural flavor; people like to eat ingredients at their “shun” or “now-in-season” in Japanese.

Eating the ingredients in season provides variety and a better way to get all the nutrients you need naturally; also a lot of raw foods are eaten that have a higher nutritional value than heavily cooked foods.

5. Portion Control

Portions tend to be smaller and are savored, and it is this portion control that stops binging and over eating.

Each portion is eaten slowly, so the stomach has more time to register when it is full. Eating slowly also aids digestion and absorption of the nutrients in the food.

6. Breakfast

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, giving a boost of energy and preventing hunger pangs later.

A typical breakfast might include green tea, steamed rice, miso soup with tofu, spring onions and maybe omelette and grilled salmon. Sounds better than Muesli to me!

7. Cook Light

In the Japanese diet, food is usually steamed, pan-fried, simmered or stir fried over intense heat. This method of cooking helps the food retain more of the nutrients and particularly anti ageing antioxidants.

8. Enjoy Sweets

The Japanese diet has room for these treats.

They love chocolate, pastries, ice cream and cookies.

The difference is they view them as a regular treat and do not overdo the portions.

One of the Best Diets on Earth

When looking at healthy diets it is clear that the Japanese have one of the best diets on earth:

· Low in cholesterol and fat

· Well balanced

A huge variety of foods to enjoy so you will never get bored.

Some people feel that dieting means starvation and unhealthy eating. If you want to drop a few pounds, the simple answer is always diet and exercise. A little exercise is always a healthy way to lose weight. The dieting part, however, is a concept most people associate with hunger. A diet does not need to be a part starvation, and it does not always mean following some fad diet or paying a company for pre-packaged meals. A diet can simply mean a better eating regimen designed by you.

Part of any healthy diet is never to starve your body. Your body needs calories to survive and maintain energy throughout the day. Although starving is associated with dieting, it’s never a beneficial choice. The goal to maintain a certain weight is to consume the same amount of calories that you use for activity. The average caloric intake is 2,000 calories, although this number depends on certain factors such as gender, age, physical condition, and height.

Eating a variety of foods is important in consuming the various nutrients you need to keep your body working in top condition. Eating essential foods such as fruits, vegetables, and whole grains will ensure your body is getting its daily intake of important nutrients.

An easy way to keep from overeating is to keep your meal portions measured and controlled. Our eyes are often bigger than our stomachs and we think we are hungrier than we really are. Keeping balanced proportions on your plate will help you eat just enough of what you need without gorging yourself.

Of course, part of a healthy diet is staying away from sweets and high fat content. Maintaining a reasonable intake of sodium will keep blood pressure at normal levels. Sugar and fats are permissible in moderation, but high sugar content can induce diabetes and high sodium can invoke high blood pressure.

Most importantly during a diet, make sure to find a healthy exercise program that works for your schedule. Exercise is beneficial for the cardiovascular system, and it helps keep your diet progressing through toning muscle and burning fat. Exercise is beneficial in your attitude towards weight loss since it will help accelerate fat loss through natural effective methods.

Eating breakfast will give you the energy to boost your morning and keep you moving throughout the day. It will also keep your appetite at bay while giving you the calories for energy without feeling tired. Breakfast will also help boost your metabolism to keep it burning calories. Even though you may think that adding more calories will only harm your weight loss, it is an essential part of any diet and will help you lose the pounds.

Eating healthy takes one step at a time. Give yourself a day to splurge on treats or eat something you’ve been craving through your diet week. If you keep yourself from permanently eating a certain food, your body will crave it more and you’re likely to over eat that certain food. Be patient with yourself through your change. Overall, the best diet is moderation is all foods and keeping consistent with healthy choices.

For more information, visit http://www.ondieting.tv.

Healthy diets promoted by many companies and gurus are anything but healthy diets – in fact, they can be harmful to your long-term health.

So if you are looking for healthy diets then you should consider if they take into account the 10 points below, which are universal in scope and are actually not that difficult to follow.

1. Balance Fat and Protein

Fat should supply around 30% of your total daily calories. Limit your intake of fat by having more vegetables in your diet.

Eat lean meats, light-meat poultry without the skin, fish, and low-fat dairy products. In addition, make sure you limit vegetable oils and butter in your diet.

Protein should be around 15% of your calorie intake. Don’t fall for the myth of so-called healthy diets that recommend eating protein at the expense of fat, it’s not natural and can cause health problems.

2. Limit Your Intake of Saturated Fat

This is the kind of fat, found mostly in animal products, that increases blood cholesterol levels and has other negative health effects. It should supply less than one-third of the calories derived from fat.

Keep your cholesterol intake below 300 milligrams per day.

3. Eat Foods Rich in Complex Carbohydrates

Carbohydrates should contribute around 55% of your total daily calories. Don’t fall for the hype that carbohydrates are bad for you they are not, just make sure you eat complex carbohydrates.

To help get the right sources, eat plenty of fruits and vegetables and six or more servings of whole grains. This will help you obtain the 25 grams of fiber you need each day.

4. Avoid too Much Sugar

Many foods that are high in sugar are also high in fat. Look at the labels to see how much sugar is in a product – many products say they are low in fat, but they are high in sugar, and this turns to fat.

5. Eat Green, Orange, and Yellow Fruits and Vegetables

Examples would be broccoli, carrots, cantaloupe, and citrus fruits. The antioxidants and other nutrients in these foods are increasingly important in helping protect against a variety of diseases.

6. Variety

Eat a variety of foods – this really is the key to a balanced diet. Don’t try to fill your nutrient requirements by eating the same foods every day – it won’t work.

7. Limit Sodium Intake

Your sodium intake should be a maximum of 2,400 milligrams per day. This is equivalent to about a teaspoon of salt. Therefore, Avoid salty foods and be careful to check food labels carefully for sodium content.

8. Vitamins and Minerals from Food

Supplements cannot substitute for a healthy diet, which supplies nutrients and other compounds besides vitamins and minerals. Foods also provide the “synergy” that many nutrients require so that they can be effective, and be broken down in the body and utilized correctly.

9. Maintain a Desirable Weight

Don’t ignore exercise, it only needs to be moderate, you don’t have to kill yourself in the gym! The two biggest causes of obesity are processed unnatural foods and our modern lazy life style.

10. Enjoy your Food

If you drink alcohol, eat chocolate, crisps etc you can – but don’t overdo it. Why shouldn’t you eat what you really enjoy? There is no reason why you can’t.

Healthy Diets are Balanced Diets

There are many healthy diets to choose from, and they’re all different, but the basis of any healthy diet should take into account the 10 points outlined here.

We have all heard of the fad diets that are supposed to help you to lose whatever amount of weight you need to lose in a very short period. More people are becoming overweight than ever before. Everyone wants the easy way out when it comes to losing weight.

What is considered a fad diet? A physician friend of mine recommended a diet pill to lose weight. I tried the diet out and found myself irritable, and my blood pressure began to rise. I did lose the weight that I had hoped to lose but I did not feel very good doing it this way.

Finally, I realized something very important. I was in control of what I ate. A healthy diet is the way to go. Discipline is something very hard to do for most people when it comes to food. You can lose the weight you want to with just a little effort. However, the effort has to be consistent. Eating healthier foods and with a little exercise you can accomplish your task.

Living a healthy lifestyle is simply a matter of balance. Eating the right foods and implementing exercise can go a long way to helping you maintain a good body weight. Fad diets often appear to work but can do long-term damage to your body if you use them often. Fad diets deprive your body of the necessary vitamins, and minerals your body needs to remain healthy. Some fad diets can even prove to be dangerous to system.

A healthy diet is easier to make a permanent part of your lifestyle and can provide you with more benefits. Adding some form of exercise to your lifestyle will complete the process of balanced living. Do some research and you will find that the only choice is a healthy diet.

Healthy diets for teenage girls – This not an easy subject to talk about due to teenage size and weight varying a lot during teenage years. In this article i will talk about healthy diets for teenage girls.

The best place to start is diet and exercise. During teenage years many girls tend to eat unhealthy foods and many do not carry out any exercise. I find that teenagers need help and motivation with weight loss. To keep on track with a dieting program can be difficult for adults so having a well structured weight loss program to follow will enable the fat loss process to become easier.

For starters, stay off the fizzy pop drips, crisps and chocolate. Consuming these sorts of things daily will not improve your weight and is very unhealthy. Please include more vegetables and fresh fruits. I know you have heard this before, but improving your diet is one of the key factors in diets for teenage girls.

Increase your exercise, participate in school gym classes, join a private gym. You must get regular exercise to burn the calories and fat you are comsuming.

In can be very hard to find a place to start, and there is a lot of advice on how to improve your diet and how to lose your fat. If you feel lost and cannot get motivated i highly recommend following a weight loss program. There on many on the market, but the best will focus on calorie intake and exercise.

Such a program will motivate you and keep you on the right path to reaching your weight loss goal. Do not let your teenage bad habbits follow you into later life increasing your chance of illness and disease. Review the latest products on the market and find a product that suits your needs.

For more weight loss information and reviews of proven Weight Loss Programs and Products visit my Weight Loss Programs website.

There are a lot of healthy diets for Weight loss out there. Finding the right one that works for you is the tricky part. With spring being right around the corner, everyone is getting ready for beach weather. You know what that means – swimsuits! I don’t know about you, but I don’t even want to think about that. While we want to lose a little weight, most people don’t know how to go about it.
What would you say is the hardest part of losing weight? I used to think it was exercise, but choosing the right kind of foods to eat is even harder. Why? Well because when you start to exercise, the body takes care of itself. The muscles get a workout and they in turn start to grow and reshape themselves.
Now with food, it is a totally different story. You know the saying you are what you eat,it couldn’t be more true. Making poor food choices can set us back with our fitness goals. It’s frustrating when you have to constantly worry about what you are eating. Each bite can be distressing. Just remember there are a lot of healthy diets for weight loss out there to be discovered.
Just remember, and commit this to memory, food is not the enemy. No food in and of itself is bad. Just control your portions, that is the key. If you can achieve that, you can eat and enjoy any food and not gain weight. Everything in moderation. For most foods, there are substitutions you can make for a healthier meal.
It’s essential to get familiar with the basics of food, if we do this we can choose foods that will be healthier for us to eat. Let’s talk about carbohydrates. The media would have us believe there are good carbs and bad carbs. In reality, there are carbs that are digested more efficiently by your body and those that are not. A combination of the two will help us throughout the day and we need them just the same to be healthy.
There are simple carbohydrates that are digested quickly. Things like candy bars, cookies and cakes hit the blood stream really quick which in turn gives us a big burst of energy after we eat them. But then we crash and burn an hour later. With complex carbohydrates, the body takes longer to break them down so their energy is released throughout the day to keep our blood sugar steady. These include fiber-rich foods, whole grains, bran, and other grains.
You can find protein in meats, fish, and legumes. When buying meat always choose extra lean, no more than 7% fat, 4% if you can find it, your body will thank you. Beans are also great if you want a good substitute for eating animal protein. They are high in protein and low in fat and cholesterol. Make a salsa with fresh tomatoes and black beans. Make some hummus with garbanzo beans, cilantro, olive oil and lemon. Protein fuels the muscles and other cellular functions in the body.
Then there is fat. I can’t say much about that. Fatty things tastes good. That’s why we like it so much. Unfortunately, it also fills those fat stores in our body. Did you know that there is no limit to the amount of fat that can fit into those cells? For that reason alone, we need to learn how food works so we can keep our weight under control.
Just remember there are a lot of healthy diets for weight loss plans out there. Use the information here to help you choose foods that will assist you in losing weight or maintain that weight loss and live a longer and happier life.

The diet enclosed is balanced it will help you lose weight give you more energy and is proven to help you live longer and protect you against disease and it provides a huge amount of foods you can eat so you will never be bored.

What is this healthy diet? Read on and find out.

Itâ??s the Mediterranean diet.

It is in the news again as its proven to help protect against disease and help you live longer ( due to one super oil we will discuss later ) first consider the following:

In contrast to Northern Europe and North America

1. People live longer in countries such as Spain Greece and Italy.

2. People have far less risk of getting cancer such as colon breast and ovarian.

3. Obesity rates are significantly less.

The super food that has put it back in the news is:

Olive oil. Just taking a small amount of oil per day in clinical tests showed that it protects against cell damage and after just two weeks people who did not have olive oil in their diet saw a large drop in free radical damage.

Olive oil is a major part of the Mediterranean diet, but is only part of why the diet is so healthy.

Oily Fish

Another major part of the diet is oily fish such as mackerel, sardines and salmon.

Oily fish are a source of omega-3 polyunsaturated fats and the complex long chain derivatives of these fats are good for heart health due to the fishâ??s anti-inflammatory and vasodilatory properties, which aids circulation.

The major components of the diet are:

â?¢ Consumption of olive oil daily

â?¢ High consumption of fruits, vegetables, breads, cereals (such as pasta, beans, nuts and seeds).

â?¢ Moderate to high consumption of fish and poultry.

â?¢ Moderate consumption of wine.

â?¢ Low consumption of eggs and red meat.

The Mediterranean Diet seems unusual as fat is given such weight in the diet.

It actively encourages people to eat more mono-saturated fats to become healthier.

It works on the notion monounsaturated fats (such as olive oil) which balances animal fat.

Monounsaturated fats are â??goodâ?? fats which are required for the body to function at its best.

Advocates of the Mediterranean diet also stress that red wine, should be consumed frequently as it is a significant factor in reducing heart disease.

Red wine is renowned for the antioxidants contained such as bioflavonoid, which helps to eliminate bad toxins in the body.

It works!

Medical research shows how healthy it is, so consider this:

If you are a dieter you can eat a huge amount of food, never be bored and drink wine as well!

Anyone who wants to live longer, protect themselves against disease and be healthier and slim should consider it.
