Radiation ‘did not kill’ teenager

Lisa Norris

A fatal accident inquiry into the death of a teenager following an overdose of radiation at Scotland’s largest cancer centre will get under way later.

Lisa Norris, who was 15 and from Girvan, was given double the required dose of radiation at the Beatson Oncology Centre in Glasgow in 2006.

At the time Lisa was being treated for a brain tumour.

The inquiry will attempt to establish if anyone was to blame for her death, or whether the tumour was incurable.

At the radiotherapy department at the centre, Lisa was given 58% too much radiation. She suffered severe burns and died a few months later.

An internal inquiry following her death found that Lisa died from her tumour, not from the overdose, but that was disputed by an independent report by one of the country’s top cancer experts.
