District 9 Collectible Ray Guns Are Going Fast

The man who designed ray guns used in District 9’s alien shoot-out has been keeping busy since the film picked up its Best Picture Oscar nomination: Greg Broadmore crafted a line of replica weapons that look just like the ones in the movie, except they don’t actually obliterate fascist humans or extraterrestrial “prawns.”
The limited-edition Gas Projector (pictured above) and Arc Generator are being hawked by New Zealand’s Weta Workshop.
Broadmore, creator of the Dr. Grordbort line of post-Victorian gizmos, precisely copied the original District 9 weapons, according to Weta rep Magnus Hjert. “The guns are absolutely identical and molded from original props (of which we have quite a few lying around) and then created in glass fiber,” Hjert told Wired.com in an e-mail. “Each weapon is then aged, or ‘broken down,’ painted and scuffed to make sure it doesn’t look brand new.”
Priced at $710 New Zealand, District 9’s 39-inch-long prop shooters don’t come cheap, but that hasn’t stopped collectors from buying into Weta’s sci-fi fantasy: The Arc Generator has already sold out.
Weta, Broadmore and their team promise more District 9 paraphernalia to come.
