“The Runaways” Soundtrack: Stewart and Fanning, Plus Stooges, Bowie and More

The Runaways biopic, starring Twilight’s Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning, melted the snow at its Sundance premiere and hits theaters across the U.S. on March 19th. While fans have gotten a few sneak peeks at the film via its teaser trailers, Rolling Stone now has your exclusive on what songs will feature on the film’s punk rock soundtrack. Since this is a film about the Runaways, the group’s catalog features heavily on the disc, and its track list is split between the original recordings and new versions by Fanning, who plays Cherie Currie, and Stewart, who portrays Joan Jett. Rounding out the album are 1975-era punk anthems by MC5, Nick Gilder, Sex Pistols, David Bowie and more.
That’s the soundtrack artwork up top and it’s pretty sweet, with a literal “cherry bomb” against the backdrop of a well-worn vinyl sleeve. The Runaways soundtrack will be available digitally on March 16th, with a physical release planned for March 23rd. You can pre-order both formats over on the soundtrack’s official Website. Until then, check out the entire Runaways track list below, and be sure to peruse our exclusive photos from the film set:
1. Nick Gilder – “Roxy Roller”
2. Suzi Quatro – “The Wild One”

“No Bad Reputation? Still a great disc.”
Why would it be on there? it came out in the 80s after they broke up.

Oh so THATS the criteria?
“Rebel Rebel”, eh?
Bold choice.
no Gary Glitter or New York Dolls?the Quatro choice should have been “48 Crash”;
still, can’t wait to own the soundtrack, and see the film..
and THEN we want the Iggy Pop movie!!
so good!
Who cares about the Runaways? Kim Fowley was the genius behind exploiting their mediocrity. Kim Fowley is the real story. The Runaways are the cornbits in his turd.
Roxy Roller remix from Gilder or original Sweeney Todd? That single changed my life, to use a cliche, but true! Not a bad track here at all, and glad to see “Dead End Justice” a favourite from the debut album–very cinematic track will come to life at last as wriiten!
lita was offered one thousand dollars for her life story in the movie by joans manager and told them where to get off..
lita was not married to tony iommi only engaged..she was married to chris holmes from wasp for a brief period..lita still rocks today with her new cd wicked wonderland with husband jim gillette
wait, where is ‘i love playing with fire’ by kristen/jett???
wasn’t kristen commenting that she was really nervous to shoot that scene. thats one of my favourite runaways songs. hope it still made the movie.
So who is going to play Lita Ford, who also was in the Runaways in the 1970s? Surely they arent’ going to steamroll over her character and ignore her importance in the band. Joan Jett was a bigger solo artist in the early 1980s, but Lita Ford, during hair metal’s reign (I’m not a fan of hair metal), was actually a bigger name than Jett during the mid-and latter 1980s – she married Tony Iommi, for about 26 days; sang with Ozzy Osbourne; had MTV videos played a ton then, etc. Let’s hope the filmmakers don’t overlook Ford’s contribution to The Runaways.
Boring Sidney.
